Contemporary Passive Solar House Energy Efficient , Large 2 Level Workshop with Private Office. Located in the picturesque Woodland Springs Subdivision, the development features 4 ponds , 7 miles of deeded right of way for walking and riding.Passive solar, as opposed to an active solar home, has no moving parts. The home itself is thestorage medium, which could be water, but for this house the concrete structure itself is the heat-sink,which stores the energy of the sun during the cool months and the cool of the night during the warmmonths. In this house an additional Trombe wall is built on the south porches which is heavy concreteblock filled with concrete and stone dust. All of the exterior walls, with the exception of the topclerestory floor and the foyer and garage addition, are concrete filled masonry with four inches ofpolystyrene on the outside and no lathe, furring strips or framing on the interior, which eliminates thermalbreaks with the exception of windows and doors. This design provides for a different experience incomfort, aesthetic, and economy. With about six hundred feet of south facing glass ( the house is faceddue solar south) the winter months provide the solar porches with the warmth of a Florida Room duringthe 50% solar days of this latitude. The comfort factor is subtle but noticeable in extreme weather, in that the walls are close to air temperature, minimizing convection currents and the radiation of our bodies to the solid surfaces. The Woodstock Soapstone provides additional comfort and beauty in the evening but was not used to actually heat the house. The house was tested and found to be one of the tightest houses the scientist had ever tested. The vertical design makes the house a solar chimney so that the first floor windows and the fourth floor windows create a good air-flow when open. Nice in the fall and spring. When a good snow falls and sticks the house absorbs additional solar gain from the reflected radiation. Structurally, the concrete block in the basement is 12” block filled with concrete and rebar. Pressuretreated joists are lagged into the walls and the rafters are tied to the wall plates with metal connectors, making the house near earthquake, hurricane resistant and the rear first floor utility area is especiallysafe, such as in a tornado warning.Due to the solar orientation the sun rises on the NE and sets on the NW side of the house in the summer. In the winter it rises on the SE side of the home and sets on the SW. The angle of the sun being reducedin the winter catches the sun and the greater angle in the summer shades the south side. East, west andnorth sides of the house have less glass for solar efficiency. The rooms are also designed with this samesolar perspective, the south east is the master bedroom and kitchen to catch the first morning light, theliving room on the west and the quietest and darkest side has the small child's bedroom. The owner turnsdown the heat pump to 65 at night during the winter. Unless it is an extremely cold and windy night theunit will not turn on overnight. The heating unit is dual-fuel propane with a 500 gallon undergroundpropane tank which also feeds the outside grill on the deck. The bathrooms, utility room and water heater are stacked vertically to reduce wait times for hot water and reduce further the amount of hot water left in the pipes. The air ducts are also stacked in the north east. For eventual installation of solar hot water system 1” copper two lines was run to the attic and control wires were also run when the house was built. The well provides enough flow to fill and manage a swimming pool. Well-pump replaced 2015, Hot water heater, pressure tanks 2016, water-softener/sand-filter was replaced in 2008, exterior doors , windows 2008 and a 400 amp underground Electric service was installed underground, heat pump 2020, Roof 2021, sump pup 2020 and stucco 2008
